There was a time when the late veteran actor Rishi Kapoor harboured a “disillusioned dislike” for superstar Rajesh Khanna. In an old interview, the Mulk actor explained that his feelings stemmed from Rajesh’s marriage to Rishi’s first co-star, Dimple Kapadia, just as he was beginning his career in the industry. Though Rishi clarified that he never had romantic feelings for Dimple, he admitted to feeling possessive about her.

During a conversation with journalist Barkha Dutt on NDTV, Rishi was asked to elaborate on his initial dislike for Rajesh Khanna. Barkha recounted an incident involving a ring given to Rishi by his then-girlfriend, Yasmin. According to Barkha, Dimple had taken the ring from Rishi, but when Rajesh Khanna, who had proposed to Dimple, saw it on her finger, he became upset and threw it. Barkha suggested that this incident may have sparked Rishi’s resentment toward Rajesh Khanna.

In response, Rishi shared, “I probably disliked him because he took away my heroine. He married her when I was just starting out in the industry. Otherwise, there was no ill feeling. I worked with him in several films, and I even directed him later on. But you’re right. The ring had a peace sign on it. It wasn’t an expensive ring, but that doesn’t matter—the love matters.” When asked why he allowed Dimple to take the ring given to him by his girlfriend, Rishi humorously added, “Dimple flicked it from me.” When pressed about whether this incident contributed to his dislike for Rajesh Khanna, he admitted, “Of course it did. He took away my ring, my heroine—so, obviously, there were enough reasons.”

Both Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia made their acting debuts in the 1973 film Bobby, a sensation that catapulted both to stardom overnight. The two later went on to co-star in films like Ajooba, Saagar, Ranbhoomi, Luck By Chance, and more. The same year that Bobby hit theaters, Dimple and Rajesh Khanna married, drawing significant attention due to their considerable age gap. However, their marriage didn’t last, as they eventually separated, although they never divorced.
